The Severn Stars Netball Franchise has a clear vision to develop, perform and grow, and we are looking for talented netball players to progress and be a part of our Severn Stars player pathway. We have an emphasis on nurturing and developing talent and creating a professional inclusive environment for all.

The player pathway consists of six U17 Nova Academies, an U19 and an U21 national performance league squads. The Nova Academies are the next step up the pathway from County Academies and replace Regional and Regional Performance Academies.

The National Performance Leagues (NPL) are England Netball sanctioned competitions for both U19 & U21 squads designed to provide the game’s outstanding youth players with a performance environment with organised, highly disciplined intense competition against the English Vitality Netball Superleague franchises and any other invited teams.

The NPL competitions also sanction tournaments in summer with a similar provision to include the U17 and U15 age groups.

Flow chart explaining the Severn Stars selection process

‘Nova’ is Latin in origin, meaning new and in Astronomy, a nova is a star that releases a tremendous burst of energy becoming extraordinarily bright. Severn Stars Nova Academies run from 6 educational institutions throughout the region; King’s School Worcester, Hartpury College, Birmingham Metropolitan College, Clifton College, Wrekin College and Wycliffe College. Open trials for the Nova Academy programme take place each September. Any player aged U17 (by birth year not school year) can attend these open trials, they do not have to reside in Severn Stars affiliated county. If a player has missed the September open trials, they can be nominated by County Academy coaches for a late Nova Academy trial.

If selected, it is important that players can commit to the Nova Academy training sessions which take place at each of the Nova Academies every Wednesday and Friday and include both technical and strength and conditioning sessions. Every Nova Academy player receives training kit, 1 x designated Severn Stars home game ticket and a Nova Academy player journal to help them progress their netball. Each month the Nova Academies come together for match play in order to provide the opportunity to put into practise the skills and tactics that have been developed in training sessions.

Players are nominated from each of the U17 Nova Academies to attend trials for the Severn Stars U17 team and if eligible (must be U15 and reside in Severn Stars affiliated county: Staffordshire, South Staffordshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire) the Severn Stars U15 team.

At the end of each season the ‘Supernova’ Tournament takes place, where the 6 Nova Academies select their best team of 12 to compete against each other in order to be crowned Supernova Champions. If you have any queries about the Nova Academies please contact Louisa Walker at
