Project Description

The Severn Stars U17 NPL Squad take part in the England Netball NPL Tournament hosted in July each year. Severn Stars are currently awaiting updates from England Netball with regards to whether the 2021 NPL Tournament will take place due to Covid-19.

The U17 squad is comprised of players nominated from within our U17 Nova Academy programme who represent Severn Stars in a series of friendlies, organised throughout the season. Open trials are then held for the U17 NPL team to enter into the England Netball Tournament.

‘Nova’ is Latin in origin, meaning new and in Astronomy, a nova is a star that releases a tremendous burst of energy becoming extraordinarily bright. Since September 2020, Severn Stars U17 Nova Academies have been running 10 educational institutions throughout the region; Oswestry School, Stafford Grammar School, Birmingham Metropolitan College, Kings School Worcester, Royal Grammar School Worcester, Wrekin College, Wycliffe College, the Crypt School, Monmouth School for Girls and Clifton College. At the end of each season the ‘Supernova’ Tournament takes place, where the 10 Nova Academies select their best team of 12 to compete against each other in order to be crowned Supernova Champions. However, due to COVID restrictions this will not be taking place in 2021.

Open trials for the Nova Academy programme take place each September. Any player aged U17 (by birth year not school year) can attend these open trials, they do not have to reside in Severn Stars affiliated county. If a player has missed the September open trials, they can be nominated by County Academy coaches for a late Nova Academy trial, contact for further information.
