Severn Stars’ shooter Georgia Rowe says the team’s tough start to the season has only strengthened the players’ resolve to fight until the end when they go up against Wasps this weekend.
Stars will be looking to get things back on track when they face their Coventry-based rivals in a local derby in front of a University of Worcester Arena home crowd on Saturday (March 14, 6pm).
“It’s been a really hard start, but we have kept positive because, when we manage to bring a 60 minute game together, we know we will be unstoppable,” said Rowe. “The disappointment about the last few games is still there and there’s a lot of regret, but we’ve had to bin it and move on, but most importantly learn from it and we feel we are doing that. We go into every game, no matter who the opposition is, wanting to win so it’s hard to take having three losses, but it’s made us even more ready to take on Wasps and fight till the end.”
Stars go into the game off the back of a loss away at Saracens Mavericks. An impressive first quarter from Mavericks saw Stars facing an 11 goal deficit. Despite efforts in each subsequent quarter to get back on level terms, Stars were unable to overcome this sizeable lead.
Rowe said Stars now go into the game against Wasps intent on getting the win and three points on the table.
“Wasps is never an easy game,” she said. “They have strength all the way through the team, with a strong target shooter. But I think we are a good match up for this Wasps side and it’s always been a tightly contested game with a close end score. You could say we are the underdogs going into this game but I believe we’ve got all the tools to win. Last year’s results mean absolutely nothing to us, so the win is more than open for us to take.”
However, she said it was crucial that the team put out a solid 60 minute performance. She added: “We’ve had a tough first couple of games but have shown that we can perform and can perform really well when we focus and keep communicating. We are going into the game against Wasps with the intent of taking the three points and I have every confidence in us to do that. A big thing for us is going to be discipline. Discipline to carry on doing what works and not slip away from the game plan at any time. We need to be physically strong so that any contested ball is ours.”
